Quriya lies to the south-east of Muscat in the area extending between Al Amerat Municipality and the Wilayat of Sur. It is bordered on the east by the Gulf of Oman and on the west by the Wilayat of Dima and Wadi Al Tain. It has a surface area of 12000 square kms and a population of 3,882 according to the 1993 census, with 65 dependent villages in its territory. It coast line stretches for approximately 100 kms along the Gulf of Oman. Quriyat is noted for its fisheries wealth with excellent stocks of kingfish and tuna, and a large number of its inhabitants earn their living from fishing.
A substantial propotion also work in agriculture, the region's farmlands being well known for cultivation of mangoes, dates, oranges, lemons, bananas, vegetables, and animal fodder.
The Quriyat coastline is noted for its natural beauty and it is a favourite recreation area for residents and visitors alike, who come to enjoy its peaceful beaches, take boat trips or go fishing.
Quriyat boasts more than 40 historic forts and towers, inclusind the famous Al Sabra fort overlooking the sea. The scattered villages of the region are linked by a network of paved and unpaved roads. |
