In bustling areas and in the middle of residential areas of the city

The Muscat Municipality proceeds with the construction of 40 parks and playgrounds

·         11 of the total 40 parks and playgrounds have been completed as part of the plan which will continue for the coming three years and cover different areas of the city

·         Parks are spread across all areas of the city in an attempt to create open spaces to relax and have fun.

·         The Azeba parks include athletic fields , a skating area, facilities, and public yards

·         The Azeba beach park and the Moarid Street square are new, modern spaces that resonate with the city’s urban tapestry.

·         Replant seasonal flowers in different areas and roads of the governorate

In the framework of the Muscat Municipalities desire to offer services to all segments of the community and provide an appropriate environment for athletic and recreational activities and to add aesthetic touches, build more parks, and create more green spaces, the General Directorate for Afforestation and Parks has begun the construction of 40 parks and fields for children spread across all of the provinces of the Muscat governorate. This is part of a deliberate plan to cover all residential neighborhoods. Designs and preparations have been made for a group of service and development projects in the field of horticulture, forestry, and landscaping according to global specifications and standards that stay true to the original aesthetic, cultural, and social Omani heritage. Through these plans, Muscat can secure its position as a human city characterized by originality and modern standards.

The directorate finished its beautification and development project for the Moarid Street square, located between Sultan Qabus Street and the Moarid side street. The total area of the square is roughly 2.5 km and an average width of 50 meters. The area is modern and equipped with all sporting facilities and services for hiking, walking, and resting. The second stage of the Azeba parks project has also been completed.

Parks

The General Afforestation and Parks Directorate built fields for children at different locations throughout the city to create areas suitable for children and families to spend quality time together and play sports. The fields are vital breathing spaces for the children, especially in crowded residential areas, as part of the directorate’s plan to create a healthy environment for athletics and recreation in the city.

40 parks and playgrounds

The Muscat Municipality has begun preparations to build forty parks and fields for children distributed across all provinces of the Muscat governorate, through a plan that is anticipated to continue for the next three years. Care was taken in selecting locations for these parks in areas characterized by population density and distance between each park. The first stage will see the construction of eleven parks and fields for children.

Each park and field for children has appropriate play equipment for different groups of the community. They are also equipped with umbrellas, chairs, light posts,  and walkways that connect different parts of the park to the brick path.

The completion of 11 parks and fields

Ansab park is one of the parks that has been completed according to plans. It is in its second stage and has a total area of 15,381 m2. The park has a brick path with a length of 2,640 m.

South Ghubrah park is in the middle of residential neighborhoods. It has an area of 3,576 m2 and has been planted with 20 trees and green turf over a total area of 2,650 m2. The park is also equipped with umbrellas, seats, and pedestrian walkways.

The Khuweir 33-A playground has been completed with an area of 3,636 m2 and planted with a number of bushes and palm trees.

The Khuweir 33-B playground has been completed with an area of 2,800 m2.

The Bawshar playground in the Bawshar 35-A area has an area of 2,111 m2, has been sodded with green turf, and equipped with different children’s toys. The park also features lighting and seating areas.

The South Heel  playground has an area of 3,104 m2 and a pedestrian walkway with a length of 750 m. The playground has been sodded with green turf covering a total area of 2,050 m2.

The Khawd playground has an area of 6,130 m2, a pedestrian walkway with a length of 1,050 m2, and is sodded with green turf covering 4,000 m2. The playground has been planted with 20 bushes and equipped with toys for children.

Two playgrounds have been built in Mawaleh. The first one is in its fourth stage and has an area of 2,180 m2 and the second is in its second stage with an area of 2,372 m2, both fully equipped with recreation and relaxation services.

The Nahda City playground is in its fourth stage and has an area of 4,423 m2 and a walkway with a length of 1,224 m.

Two playgrounds have been built: one in Nahda City in the Hajir area (A) with an area of 5,768 m2 and one in Nahda City in the Hajir area (B) with an area of 4,533 m2.

The playground projects also include hexagonal football fields, play areas, shaded rest areas, seating equipped with lighting, in addition to artfully shaped formations made for various kinds of flowers, green sod, and leafy trees. Much care has been taken in choosing the sites for these playgrounds in areas with high population density and urban expansion.

In the Quriyat province, the Quriyat park has been renovated and equipped with a brick walkway. The Buheira park was rebuilt previously after being affected by inclement weather.

The second stage of the Azeba parks project

The Azeba parks project, located next to Sultan Qabus Street, adjacent to the National Transport Company carried out advanced stages of work involved. The first stage was completed, and the second stage is currently underway. The parks have been designed according to global standards, made apparent by the link between these parks and the urban tapestry of the surrounding region. They serve as a connecting point for adjacent residential neighborhoods including homes, schools, stores, and mosques. They were also designed to offer recreation, hiking, relaxation, and walking services for young children and adolescents, the foundation of the region’s population.

The parks include football fields, volleyball and basketball courts, a skating area, and various other play areas. There are also open fields that are ideal meeting spots for Omanis and residents of Oman from the neighboring areas as a way of strengthening social and cultural life in the city.

The parks of rest areas and cafes for patrons who have taken the opportunity to walk along the pedestrian walkways or to seek refuge under the shade of trees selected from the Omani ecosystem that are well-suited to withstanding heat and dry climates.

The lighting was designed in accordance with a group of foundations that take into consideration the lighting needs of park patrons without wasting energy. Their design also considers the way brightness may produce irritating light pollution for surrounding residential areas.

The Azeba Beach Park

One of the newest additions to Muscat’s parks, care was taken throughout the project to connect the Azeba beach to the park. It was designed keeping in mind the tastes of visitors and tourists. The sides of the park and its walkways will include brickwork and umbrellas and seats will be built. The park with be planted with shady trees, most particularly palm trees, in addition to nice-smelling, flowery bushes and green sod will be laid out. The project carries particular importance as it serves a large section of families, visitors, and tourists.

The park also consists of a brick pedestrian walkway with a length of 800 meters, and four umbrellas  and ten seats in a rest area. The park was sodded with 12,000 meters of green turf, about 50 date palms,  40 coconut palms, and a number of bushes, flowers, and decorative flowerbeds. The park has 30 parking spaces and in its public area there are places to sit and a paved walkway  for the convenience of families and other frequenters of the park, encouraging them to use the space for recreation all week long.
