A Study To Develop Al-Hamriyah With A Global Vision
• Al-Hamriya under the observation of students of Sultan Qaboos University, the American University of Arizona, and the German University.
• Identifying the problems and observations and developing initial solutions for architectural and urban planning in the area.
The scientific study of "The Development of Al-Hamriyah" in Muttrah continues within its planning and urban frameworks amid the lively and population-dense business environment. The area, with all its dimensions, is monitored under the observation of a group of students specialized in Architecture and Urban Planning at the American University of Arizona and with the participation of students from Sultan Qaboos University and the German University of Science and Technology, under the supervision of specialists and officials in Muscat Municipality. The study continues up to 1st October. It is hoped that preliminary solutions to the problems of the area will be concluded. Today morning, in Bait Al-Baranda, this workshop will be completed by a visual presentation and a discussion session on the findings of the study in the presence of HE, the Chairman of Muscat Municipality and a number of officials.
On the content of the topic, Eng. Hilal Al-Busaidi, an architect in Muscat Municipality, says that the study is based on two phases: the first is holding workshops of continued joint work for students in the hall of the Bait Al-Baranda among the students of the three global universities and specialists from Muscat Municipality in order to collect data and statistical information, identify the details of the area using geological and architectural maps, identify the uses of diverse Urban residential, commercial and leisure facilities and identify the main and branch roads and public services and facilities which directly try to identify the problems of urbanism and planning in the area. The student delegation will visit the area on the ground to collect the necessary data and propose some initial ideas that will prepare the students to complete their detailed studies in the second phase to present their final perception of the area by the end of the semester and after their return to the American University of Arizona.

Objective Of The Study
Prof. Mark, head of the student delegation of the American University of Arizona, and the supervisor of the study, indicates that the objective of the study is the participation of students in education, cooperation to exchange diverse expertise to conduct this study and trying different work environments involving near varying terrain of rocky hills and the location of Al-Hamriyah in a district of modern life in terms of transportation, trade and housing. The municipality aims, through such study, at joint cooperation with local and international universities to express and benefit from proposals and ideas which will develop the districts with all its utilizations within the Governorate. It also aims to give participants practical skills in the area of ??specialization, enrich the cultural and intellectual exchange between the students and introduce them to the Omani architectural patterns, inspired by the authentic Islamic heritage and civilization.
Major Challenges
In the midst of field visits, intensive workshops and open discussions between students and Prof. Mark as well as the specialists in Muscat Municipality, a number of challenges facing the area appeared on the table of study, notably, according to Levi from the American University of Arizona, the recurrent traffic jams on the streets of Al-Hamriya and at intersections and the roundabouts linked to the main roads, and slow traffic in out of rush hours, as well. There is also the problem of drainage of surface rainwater in Al-Hamriyah upon rainfall and the descent of the rocks coming from the mountains adjacent to the area, which forms, on its erosion, serious consequences on buildings, facilities, life and property. Surface water is also leading to the formation of water lakes in residential districts and streets, resulting in traffic and healthy problems through the spread of mosquitoes and insects that live on accumulated water. Joseph, as a student from the University of Arizona, adds that the area is also suffering from overpopulation and the prevalence of expats who intermingle with the citizens, foreshadowing a step in the psychology of the area and the impact on both the family structure and social cohesion. There is diversity between modern architecture and the traditional style, adding a replete history in this area with its various features.

Methodology Of The Study
Eng. Ibrahim Al-Ebry, an architect in Muscat Municipality, explains that the study is based on the compilation of all the demographic and Urban data and information pertaining to Al-Hamriyah and provision of the statistics on the numbers of population and facilities and knowledge of the capacity of the roads in rush hours and others, in addition to guidance with the previous technical studies, social or environmental studies performed on the area.

Importance Of The Study
The importance of the study lies in identifying the major daily and recurrent problems and observations, suffered by the human element as the primary engine and the first support of development and deliberate strategic solutions created to resolve the obstacles. About her role in the study, alumna Eng. Reem Al Riyami, a participant from Sultan Qaboos University, is performing joint work within groups to get to know about the details of Al-Hamriyah, identifying places and points that are suffering from problems and pay field visits to the area and places to present descriptions and reports about it. "The study represents practical and field refinement for us, the students and develops our spirit of cooperation and exchange of experience. It also links us with the diverse environments of work, for it is going according to
planned and deliberate scientific and practical insights under the umbrella of the Muscat Municipality and the valuable universities" said Eng. Reem.
Visits and Tourism
Eng. Reem Al-Riyami
Moreover, Eng. Dalal Al-Lawatti, illustrates that the study is permeated by a program of visits to some governorates and states in the Sultanate to introduce the participants to their Omani natural and tourist features and varying styles in addition to the harmony of different natural terrain and diverse agricultural, coastal, mountainous and rural environments as well as the styles of daily life in such environments under hot and temperate weather in some areas in the Sultanate. Eng. Dalal also adds that the study gives her more confidence and moral preparation to enter the work environment, and that the study has a dimension of coherence and intellectual exchange with the developed countries, regardless of the benefit from their experience in the development of the Sultanate. Joseph expresses that the tours have made us familiar with the civilization of Oman with its maintained heritage, care for history and old customs and the past architecture in the states of Al-Dakhliyyah, Nizwa, Bahla, Al-Hamra and other states that we have already visited. We have also seen the development every spot here in the Sultanate, that is replete with modern achievements.
