Muscat Municipality executes free ring roads related to Muscat International Airport

•   Accomplishment of 85% of 18 November road heading to Airport, Almog project and inauguration of bridge within the next month.
•   Three lanes from intersection of Al-Anwar till bridge and intersection of airport entrance in the west.  . 
• In the east, the connection of Muscat highway (8) with Airport through three lanes and construction of new two intersections are continued. 
   
  

The percentage of development Project of 18 November El-Mog Street, construction of bridge and intersection to entrance of Muscat International Airport reached 85% . Muscat Municipality continues rapidly the accomplishment of this Project in the area locating between intersection of Al-Anwar with Athaibah till entrance of Muscat International Airport in the western side of Almog project according to the highest international engineering standards in roads field.

The Project includes extension of 18 November street into three lanes in each way from the light signals in Al-Anwar Street till bridge and intersection of Airport entrance, construction of concrete traffic medians and gardening the area. It is expected that this phase will be inaugurated within the next month.

The second part of bridge construction on this road is continued. The bridge was established with standard engineering specifications and new side approach in the form of waves and sea movement due to harmony of its location with nature of place and adjacent to beach of Athaibah and Almog project. This intersection serves Muscat International Airport directly and roads related to it as well as current or future commercial and economic projects in this vital area. These improvements and proposed intersections came after the traffic study concerning this area which was completed in 2009. This study was executed in order to recognize effects of Almog touristic project and proposed touristic and commercial projects in area on network of surrounding roads and improvements required for raising efficiency of roads and intersections to comply with excepted traffic.

Roads of eastern side of the Airport:

In the eastern side of the Airport, the works of execution of project of roads connecting highway of Muscat and Muscat International Airport are continued to connect them directly with this strategic project executed by Ministry of Transportation and Communication. Muscat Municipality prepares the roads surrounding modern establishments of Airport passing through Sultan Qaboos Street and Grand Mosque Street along with possibility of ingress or egress to all these roads through free and wide ports for the traffic heading to or from these roads.

 

The Project consists of a 5 km long road including three main lanes in both ways from Muscat highway to the Airport which will be extended to be 4 lanes at the intersections and bridges in the way of Airport and 5 lanes in the way of Muscat highway.

The route which is currently executed starts from the eighth intersection in the Muscat highway passing through the western side of Ghala Industrial area to Grand Mosque road. Two intersections will be executed, the first one will serve Ghala Industrial area and plant sewerage in Al- Ansab in addition to the future extensions in Oman Center for Exhibitions and Conferences area. The importance of this intersection is represented in being between intersection No.(8) on Muscat highway road and Grand Mosque road as it will provide free traffic to Muscat International Airport as well as it will distribute the traffic into network of roads surrounding it. The Project also includes construction of upper bridges and an intersection with light signals. The second intersection will be executed in Grand Mosque road which will ensure smooth traffic from this road to the Airport and Muscat highway road.

The Project will include execution of a group of 3 km long service roads which will facilitate the traffic in the area. The project also includes gardening, lightening and different protections.

The works of Project will also include transferring and protecting a group of electricity, water, communication and drainage services lines. 26% of works of Project will have accomplished by end of September and it is expected that it will have executed and opened for traffic by the end of the next year.

Future plans

Among the future plans in this area and in order to promote efficiency of roads, service of plans and governmental, private and touristic establishments, a design of two-way road of Exhibitions Street will be executed. The importance of this Project lies in being a service road and adjacent to Sultan Qaboos Street. Its importance will be doubled significantly soon after inauguration of many other huge establishments on its sides. It is also connected directly with main roads network surrounding Irfan neighborhood, Grand Mosque road and Muscat highway road.

This Project includes execution of two-way road in the current road through implementing two lanes in each way along with traffic median, development of current intersections, provision of all traffic safety requirements, installation of lights, establishment of all traffic safety systems and rainwater and valleys drainage channels. Execution of two-way road in Al-Anwar street is one of the future plans. Currently, it is important because it is a connector between 8 November Street and Sultan Qaboos Street as well as it is considered an important entrance and access for Northern Athaibah area.
