Muscat Municipality is currently experimenting the operation of an intelligent central system for the lighting network in the Governorate of Muscat, with the aim of reducing maintenance costs and the use of the new systems in operating these lighting networks. A total of 40 electrical grid have been installed and operated to monitor and retrieve information.
Mr. Ziyad Al Zadjali, Director of Lighting Department at Muscat Municipality, said: "This step will introduce a modern concept for managing street lights through a simulation system that tracks all lighting complexes in Muscat Governorate. This system monitors performance and sends information and is able to know the state of the lighting network. In the event of any malfunction, the coordinates of the system are determined and the specialists go directly to the precise site, which in return will shorten the time required for maintenance and of course simplifies operational processes.
He added; "This step will also enable the central monitoring of street lighting system to be quite smart, as this system has many advantages. It will allow scheduling of the lighting time, which helps to allow the control staff to change the schedule Using the program to adjust the schedules with different seasons and change the times of sunrise and sunset, as well as the possibility of extracting reports of the status of the lighting network in an instantaneous or monthly or on demand and determine the duration required to help evaluate this network and to eliminate any processes to rationalize energy consumption and contribute to make streets safe according to the remote control system.
"The Municipality of Muscat, represented by the General Directorate of Projects (Lighting Department), is looking forward to the initiative in centralizing and monitoring the street lighting system. The system will enable the system to connect all the lighting network, control lighting and send information in real time. This will ensure less consumption of power by controlling them. Information will also be sent immediately; through SMS and e-mail to allow immediate response from the control team in the event of any interruption without delay.
It is worth mentioning that the first phase of this system has been completed and work is in progress to complete the installation of all sensors on the rest of the lighting poles deployed in the Governorate of Muscat to be completed during the coming period. This definitely reflects Muscat Municipality`s keenness to find practical solutions in operating systems that are related to the environment While at the same time maintaining and adopting smart city initiatives to make Muscat more beautiful and sustainable.
