Muscat municipality celebrates with Arab countries on March 15 of every year the day of the Arab city, which comes this year under the slogan (Sustainable cities to make the inhabitants happy), celebrating the fifty-first anniversary of the Organization of Arab cities which was founded in 1967.
Towards sustainable cities to delight the inhabitants
In the organization`s speech on this occasion, His Excellency Eng. Ahmed bin Hamad al-Sabeeh, Secretary-General of the Organization of Arab cities, stated: "We wanted the celebration our Arab cities this year to be qualitatively different from the last 50 years; in implementing the goals of the sustainable development Agenda 2030, This year`s commemorative slogan revolves around inclusive and sustainable development: "Sustainable cities for the happiness of the inhabitants"
Projects for the convenience of the inhabitants
On this occasion, Khalid bin Muhammad bin Omar Bahram, assistant chairman of Muscat municipality for the services affairs explained that the municipality enjoys partnership with Arab institutions specialized in the field of municipal employment, most notably the Arab Cities Organization, through the exchange of experiences, the strengthening of relations and the utilization of experiences in the areas of city development. The municipality is an active member of a number of organizations and institutions concerned with the municipal affairs, and has made many achievements both domestically and externally.
In the belief in the role and importance of the organizations, the municipality of Muscat became a member of the Arab Cities Organization in 1971.
Investing efforts
Muscat municipality, through the organization`s relations, has invested in the development of municipal work areas in Muscat Governorate, where Muscat municipality is actively involved in the Arab Cities Organization Award, based in Doha, by sending nominations periodically, and it was able to achieve advanced ranks in many competition areas Architectural, cosmetic, afforestation and environmental awareness.
Landmarks in Muscat

Services and projects
Muscat Municipal services and projects are distributed to cover all the willayahs of Muscat Governorate (Muscat, Mutrah, Buosher, As`Seeb, Al-Amirat, and Qurayyat). The most recent projects implemented by the municipality are: The project of duplicating al-Khoud carriage way, which has ensured a smooth movement of vehicles and motorists, and the service road in Al-Amirat, the al-Jabal road which connects al-Amirat Heights area by 1,200 meters long, which was built according to standard technical specifications.
The construction of a park in al-Koud in the area of the As`Seeb , with all its facilities, on a surface area of about 15 thousand square meters, including children`s playgrounds and a baseball field. a 6-a-side football field, and a walkway.
On the other hand, the Muscat communications center has obtained recently the ISO 9001:2015 after passing all the requirements of the certificate according to international standards, representing the efforts made by the Muscat communications center aimed at improving and simplifying business processes.
Public Parks
The municipality plays a vital role in promoting health and creating green and healthy public spaces to delight the inhabitants of Muscat governorate. It has built many walkways and green parks that promote physical health with some games for children.
The municipality has also provided some physical sports tools within the parks and gardens that are suited to all age groups, as well as creating a walkway for cycling, such as the walkway at the Seeb waterfront.
Facilitation of transactions
The municipality is moving towards the adoption and modernization of some technical projects and programmes in line with the municipal labor system, with a view to simplifying and facilitating procedures for beneficiaries of municipal services. It has started to deal with the national electronic system, providing the lease renewal service to the real estate management offices, and issuing the third version from the application of Baladiyati app on smartphones, the inauguration of the new version developed for Muscat Municipality web site, and the addition and provision of new service numbers Electronic that will be provided through the offices of Sanad.
Achievements
Muscat municipality has won many award in the municipal field; such as the award of H.H. Sheikh Salim al-Ali as`Sabah for Informatics for the best technical projects in the Arab nation at its sixteenth session and this is about their participation in the "municipal" smart phone application project, as one of the technical projects provided by the government sector in Oman.
Last year, the municipality received the second place as the best municipality to issue building permits at the level of GCC countries (the Municipal Action Cooperation Council prize) for the first session of the year (2015/2016). It has also won the best electronic service award through mobile telephones for the application of "Baladiyati" in the Sultan Qaboos Award for e-government services in 2016.
At the level of the Arab States, the municipality of Muscat harvested three prizes at the fifth session of the Arab Cities Organization competition in 1994, when the municipality won the award the first in the architecture of Muscat Municipality Building, the first prize in beautification of cities, as well as the second prize in the area of afforestation. She received the second level of environmental awareness in the Arab Cities Award competition in 1996, and the municipality in 2001 won the first place in the award the institution that is distinguished at the level of the Arab nation in the business and services provided to the public through its distinguished experience in the public sector and is considered This award is one of the three most important categories of the prize established by the Arab Organization for the Administrative development of the Arab administration.
It was able to obtain the best public hygiene experience, practices and services awarded in 2003. It was also able to win the Arab Cities Organization`s information systems (Systems and software) award, tenth session (2008-2010), and receive to the Middle East Prize for municipal and city-based division of the Middle East Award for the DATA Matix) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
In addition, the Muscat municipality website won the "Structural Creativity" award for the category of municipal and governorate sites within the 2010 e-Government Shield awards, organized by the Arab Organization for Administrative Development of the League of Arab States, the Academy of Internet Awards and the award of the Muscat municipality website Arab egovernment shield in the field of technical innovation from the municipal and governorate sites category at the second session of the year 2011.
