Maintenance work to As`Sareen Bridge in Al-Amirat

Ibrahim al-Hassani
Muscat municipality has followed up the matter discussed by the public about As`Sareen Bridge in al Amirat. The bridge has been affected by the exceptional climatic condition that the Sultanate was exposed to over the past years.
The municipality wishes to clarify that the work had exceeded the planned duration, owing to some technical reasons during its implementation, as it has been noticed that there was a large cavity down in the ground under the bridge and is full of groundwater.Therefor, the supervising consultant has been directed to do comprehensive tests and ensure that there will be no factors to affect the safety of the bridge in the future.
After review, the study concluded that the cavity should be injected with a concrete mixture through some holes made in the concrete. However, because the bridge is located in an area close to a dam, and due to the large amount of groundwater below the foundations and the impossibility of sucking it with pumps, it was necessary for the concrete specialists to design a concrete mix that suits such case.
Currently, the concrete cracks are under way to repaired, which requires lifting the concrete beams, re-establishing some of the concrete parts affected by the displacement, and finally filling the soil behind the affected bridge pillar and repaving the asphalt layer above the bridge.
In order to carry out the above-mentioned actions and considering the safety of the road users, it was necessary to divert traffic until the project was completed, by the municipal specialists and the Royal Oman Police.
Muscat municipality apologizes for any inconvenience caused by the implementation of this project.
