Muscat Municipality participates in the fourth symposium of tropical cyclones

Muscat Municipality has participated recently in the fourth symposium of tropical cyclones and Sudden floods, which was held at the conference hall in the Diplomatic Club and organised by the Oman water society.
The symposium aims to assess the experience of the Sultanate after 10 passing 10 years since Cyclones Ghunu and Phet. The Municipality has presented a paper entitled" The work and projects carried out by the Muscat Municipality after the exceptional weather conditions. The paper has assessed the role played by Muscat Municipality in preventing flood risks and the how such problems were addressed.
Mrs. Asia al Maskari said that the most important challenges facing the Municipality is in the fast urban sprawl that has invaded wadies waterways, and the high cost of projects preventing flood risks and the cost of compensation associated with it.
Mrs. Asia has also indicated the importance of developing a shared database between agencies on urban planning and management of flooding, as well as updating the maps of the flood made in the early nineties. It should be noted that this symposium has also discussed a number of topics, which aimed to review the experiences of the world in the field of preparations for cyclones.
