The directorate general of projects in Muscat Municipality is the body in charge of installing and maintaining the lighting system of Muscat streets. The directorate has recently formed 5 teams to do the maintenance work to the lighting system in the morning period, 2 in the evening and 1 after midnight. There is also a special team to deal with power rooms and RCCB breakers.

Interior streets lighting projects

The lighting administration has provided recently a lighting system along 28 km street in al Amirat, Madinat Sultan Qaboos, al Mashaghil and Ghshbiyya streets in southern al Mubeilah.
It is also in the process of installing lighting poles in al Amirat heights along 3 km street, al Amirat 5th 8 km, Wadi ar`Rihab, and al Muzari` 2 km.

Maintenance:

For the maintenance, the administration maintained about 1859 meters of cables in 2018. The work included fixing ground wires, replacing the concrete bases and power supply system affected by traffic accidents.

LED lighting system:

With a view to cut down financial expenditure and electric consumption, and to use environment friendly alternatives, the administration is currently replacing old light bulbs with ones LED`s. So far it has replaced about 1045 bulbs along the 18th November street, and at the Qurm beach along 1800 meters and along Dama street in as`Seeb 3000 meters.

The central control of street lighting:

With the aim to cut down expenditure of maintenance, Muscat Municipality is currently experimenting a smart central control system that is capable of determining the precise location of any fault in the lighting network, which in return provides quick response and saves more time.

A smart conversing system between traffic lights:

This system operates on a green waves system that allows continuous traffic flows across several intersections in one main direction. Signals are coordinated between traffic lights, according to sensor data from current traffic. When a signal turns green at an intersection, it sends the next intersection a remote signal, which illuminates the green signal there, as well. The traffic light will turn red, once it receives a signal about the presence of vehicles at the next intersection. The results of the 18th November Street sensors indicate that the density of stopped cars waiting at intersections was reduced by 50 per cent, compared to before the sensors were installed, in addition to increasing the flow of traffic and reducing fuel consumption.
