Muscat Municipality shift to negative human habits in combating proliferation of pests
• Tendency to use natural pest control methods to mitigate the environmental pollution.
Despite the huge efforts made by the pest control department of Muscat Municipality in controlling pests, there are still some odd human behaviors stimulating the proliferation of pests, insects and rodents.
Ms. Nujood al Umraniyyah who is an environment health inspector in Muscat Municipality explained that there are some wrong behaviors that contribute to the spread of insects and rodents, and she continued: "abandoned houses for example are a convenient ground for rodents to breed, even throwing waste of restaurants, cafes and houses in unsealed bags attracts pests, rodents or astray sick animals. Nujood has also pointed out to having enclosed wells inside houses, watering trees with sewage water all causes a condition of unbalance to the environment.
During one month, Muscat Municipality in Bousher carried out inspection campaign to 2572 houses in regions of al Uzeibah and northern al Ghubra. The campaign was to familiarize citizens and residents with the optimal ways to avoid spread of pests. Such effort was eventually crowned by a decrease of communications with 48.8%.
Fair to mention here that Muscat Municipality relies on chemical pesticides only as a last option. Municipality prefers mechanical or biological methods first like suction of ponds or using small fish like Garra in coordination with the Department of malaria eradication at the ministry of health.
