Muscat Municipality and Be`ah: Complementary efforts to address urban challenges



• Completion rate exceeds 95% of transporting waste sector in Muscat

Muscat Municipality moves forward to develop the waste management in Muscat Governorate in a way ensuring best practices for addressing urban challenges. And through the effective partnership between the public and private sectors, and the awareness raising campaigns to reduce waste disposal, the waste management witness drastic development.
Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (Be`ah) was assigned to take the waste management sector in by the Royal Decree (No. 46/ 2009), and according to the consent between Muscat Municipality and Be`ah, the municipality shall take care of the general cleaning operations to residential and commercial areas, whereas Be`ah, in its turn, will transfer the waste in containers, plus agricultural, solid, construction, dead animals and electrical residues to its landfills.
     In late August 2017, wilayah of as`Seeb witnessed the first phase of transferring waste sector to Be`ah, and in July 2019, Muscat Municipality transferred the sector to Be`ah in the wilayah of al Amirat, then Mutrah in October 2019, and Qurayyat in March 2020, and finally Bousher in April 2020.
Be`ah divided Muscat into two parts; (Muscat, 1) which covers the wilayats of Qurayyat, Muscat, Mutrah and part of Bousher, while (Muscat 2) includes Wilayat as` Seeb and the remaining part of Bousher. In march 2020, Be`ah distributed about 2616 containers in all villages of Qurayyat, each container has a capacity of 1100 litres. Then Muscat Municipality took all its containers from the wilayah. The overall, the completion rate the project exceeds 95% in Muscat governorate.
