Muscat Municipality Constructs Water Drainage Channels in Al Khuwair

• The project includes 3 phases, where the first has been completed, the second is 90% completed, and the third is on the way towards tender.

• The project is to drain rainwater immediately which allows a smooth traffic flow.

Muscat Municipality is currently constructing drainage channels for rainwater at the Sultan Qaboose street in al Khuwair. The work included designing and implementing quality and efficient drainage channels that ensure a smooth traffic flow in any climatic condition.

Engineer Abdullah Al Ameri, assistant director of road projects department in Muscat Municipality said that the project consists of three phases for the discharge of surface water in Al Khuwair area. The first phase was to construct a rainwater drainage channel that is ( 1115 ) meters long, starting from the ministries street until the sea. The closed canal consist of three cells with a total width of 8 metres, and 1.5 high. The project was started in the third quarter of 2017, and the basic works of its first phase were completed by the end of 2019.

Eng Abdullah Al Ameri pointed out that the second package of the project is currently in progress, which includes the rehabilitation of the service street in the ministries area and to increase the number of lanes; in preparation for a partial diversion of traffic from and to the Sultan Qaboos street. The canal will have a width ranging from (3-5) meters and an average depth of (2) two meters, and a total length of (945) meters. Work in this phase started in October 2019, and is expected to be completed by mid-2021, where the work requires the conversion of different services and taking into account the busy traffic in the region, and the completion rate of this package reached about 91%.

The assistant director of road projects department at Muscat Municipality explained that the third package of this project is expected to be submitted and assigned soon to tender in line with the completion of the second package, where the third package includes works to upgrade Sultan Qaboos Street to a level commensurate with the channels that were implemented in the previous stages.
