Muscat Municipality implements development projects in the various wilayahs of Muscat Governorate in accordance with well-studied visions and systematic executive steps, to serve the city community and the surrounding establishments. Part of the projects are vital road network wich were designed taking into account the specifications and standards that are consistent with the requirements of sustainability, and meet the needs of the population, in line with the plans of the renaissance witnessed by the Governorate of Muscat. This report sheds light on the most prominent road infrastructure projects implemented by the municipality.
First: Road Projects
• Dual Carriageway from SQU to Khoud Six
Muscat Municipality has recently assigned a project to design and construct a dual carriageway which extends from the roundabout of Khoud district 6 to the traffic light intersection located in front of gate No. (2) of the Sultan Qaboos University.
There will be two lanes created for each direction with a total length of (3.5) kilometres, accompanied by side lanes for pedestrians in both directions with a total length of (7) kilometres, and to install side barriers and water crossings.
The existing roundabout at the sixth district of Al Khoud will be converted into a four-way intersection with light signals, in addition to the construction of a new intersection with light signals in front of the entrance leading to the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital.
• Expand the Mouj and November 18 Streets
Aiming to enhance traffic flow all over Muscat governorate, Muscat Municipality will implement early next year 2023 a project to expand Al Mouj and November 18 streets to be a three lane streets for each direction, and replacing the roundabouts of (Al Mouj, Al Behjah, and Al Ishraq in Northern al-Hail) to high-capacity intersections equipped with traffic lights, in addition to paving service streets for the existing commercial buildings in the area, with the establishment of surface water drainage channels where necessary.
• Murtufa Dual Carriageway Project
As part of municipal pursuit to enhance traffic flow in Muscat roads, Muscat Municipality, in cooperation with the Ministry of Defence, commenced the project to construct Al-Murtafa`a dual carriageway-phase two - which extends from Al-Murtafa`a roundabout to the roundabout of the Armed Forces Hospital, then heads to the Sultan Qaboos University intersection. The project shall be accompanied by some infrastructure works to raise the efficiency of the 8 km-long link connecting Al-Muwalih intersection with Muscat expressway through the Armed Forces Hospital roundabout.
The project will also dualize the 1.2 km long Sultan Qaboos University Street in al Khoud, beginning from the SQU intersection to the intersection next to the National Center for research and treatment of cancer diseases. The project will also construct a dual carriageway that will be (9.5) km long, and service roads with a length of (7.76 ) km, plus two signalized intersections. A roundabout will be also constructed near the Armed Forces Hospital, the addition of (16) box culverts for surface water drainage. The project has been assigned for implementation, and it is hoped that the implementation will continue for (18) months period.
• Expand the Roundabout at the Sayyida Maizoon Mosque
Following the supreme directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq to implement an additional package of development projects in Muscat governorate in the five-year plan (2021-2025), Muscat Municipality begins implementation of a project to expand the Roundabout at the Sayyida Maizoon Mosque in the southern Al-Muwalih area and to convert the existing roundabout into an intersection with light signals, in addition to the establishment of a network of surface water drainage channels, low water crossings and protections, in order to enhance the traffic flow in different climate conditions.
The work will also expand the intersection by adding new traffic lanes in both directions, rehabilitating the water drainage channel next to the current roundabout with a width of (40) meters, and making side protections on both sides of the channel. Likewise, the water drainage holes under Maizoon and Shabab streets will be widened; to be as many as (12) holes, (3) meters wide, and (two meters) high. Adding a box culvert with a number of (3) openings, a width of (3) meters, and a height of (1.5) meters at the bottom of the streets of Maizoon and Al-Muwalih Bridge.
• Ansab-Jefnain Dual Carriageway
As an interpretation of the supreme directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to implement an additional package of development projects in Muscat governorate during the five-year plan (2021-2025), Muscat Municipality will soon begin construction of the three-lane dual carriageway project of Al-Ansab-Al-Jefnain, starting from Falaj Al Sham in Bousher to Al jafnain area in Seeb. The project will also convert the existing roundabouts into flyovers and tunnels, in addition to building side protections and drainage canals.
• Al-Joud Dual Carriageway al-Amirat (Phase 1)
Muscat Municipality has entrusted the project to add an entrance to al-Joud Street in the wilayat of Al-Amirat to reduce traffic congestion at the existing entrance near the Al-Mahj intersection, so that the planned entrance at al-Amirat street will take a route near the Oman Cricket Academy and connect it to the existing roundabout of Al-Ihsan.
