The Amirat Municipality organizes awareness lectures for Muscat Schools
The Awareness and Guidance Office from the General Directorate of the Muscat Amirat Municipality recently gave in cooperation with the Department of Health Affairs several awareness lectures to school students to spread environmental and health awareness among members of society.
Fahd Azri, a social researcher at the Awareness and Guidance Office, said that a lecture was given to the Nahda Primary School on food health and safety. The lecture was presented by health inspector Badr El Wahaibi from the Food Inspection and Control department. It included a visual presentation dealing with several subjects related to food-borne illnesses, those who are most vulnerable to contracting these illnesses, how food can be harmful to health, the conditions that promote the growth of bacteria, and how to correctly handle food. At the end, the lecturer gave the students a group of guidelines and instructions to guarantee food safety, and reiterated the importance of calling the Muscat Municipality’s free hotline at 1111 in the case of any complaints or notices.
Another lecture was presented in the same school about smoking, given by the health inspector Mohammad Al Araimi, to increase awareness of the dangers associated with tobacco use and to encourage students to cease use. The lecture also included the harmful effects of tobacco, ways to protect oneself from them, and how to treat resulting symptoms from smoking, a dangerous and fatal epidemic in today’s world. Students were reminded that the Muscat Municipality had previously issued resolutions to ban smoking in closed public spaces, in procedures to spread awareness to youth of the dangers of smoking and encouraging adult smokers to quit. Tobacco consumptions is one of the biggest contributing factors to the aggravation of different diseases such as heart attacks, strokes, and cancer. The same lecture was presented to students from Abdullah Bin Salam Primary School.
In the Maaz Bin Jabal (Siyya Village), a lecture was given on insects and rodents by Youssef Sobhy from the Department of Insects and Rodents, which included a visual presentation dealing with several subjects such as becoming familiar with types and numbers of cockroaches, especially those found in Oman, the life cycle of cockroaches, the places where they live, and ways to fight and prevent infestations.
