The Amirat Awareness Office celebrates the World No Tobacco Day
In recognition of the World No Tobacco Day held on May 31st of each year, the Awareness and Guidance office of the Muscat Municipality’s General Directorate distributed recently posters forbidding smoking in public places under the jurisdiction of the Amirat province. These places include gas stations, car washes, commercial venues (including restaurants, cafes, and other food vendors), etc.
Fahad Al Azry, the Awareness and Guidance Office’s social researcher, pointed out that, in recognition of this day, smoking awareness lectures had been held in the past in schools around the province such as the Abdullah Bin Salam School, the Nahda Primary School. Here, Muhammad Al Arimi, the health inspector from the Department of Food Inspection and Observation, gave lectures.
The World No Tobacco Day, sponsored annually by the World Health Organization (WHO), aimsto increase awareness of the dangers of tobacco use, urge smokers to quit, remind people each year of the damaging effects associated with smoking, and provide ways of protecting and treating an issue that has become dangerous and lethal to mankind.
The Municipality previously issued resolutions banning smoking in closed public areas in an attempt to prevent youth from starting smoking and encouraging adults to quit. Tobacco consumption is one of the biggest contributing factors to the exacerbation of many diseases such as heart attack, stroke, and cancer.
